Welcome to the web site of
The Independent
Pedigree Whippet Racing Club,

Cotheridge, Worcestershire.

The club was formed to give pedigree whippet owners the opportunity to let their dogs fulfil their natural instinct to run, whilst allowing them to compete together.

We have our own permanently set-out race track in the village of Cotheridge, just outside Worcester, on the A44 Bromyard Road with maginificent views of the Malvern Hills.

We are a small club and welcome both beginners and experienced racegoers to our meeting which are held on Sundays starting at about 11:00 am. Our season runs from March to November, depending on the weather.

We are affiliated to the Racing Club section of The Whippet Club, which was founded in 1899, thus being the oldest breed club in existence. The Whippet Club Racing Association (WCRA) was set-up in 1969 and provided the framework of rules governing pedigree whippet racing. They also organise the four annual Whippet Club Racing Championships. In 2008, they are being held at the cricket ground in Moreton-in-Marsh, Gloucestershire on 13 April (bend), 01 June (straight), 10 August (straight) and 05 October (bend).

The whippets are placed in traps and chase a mechanical lure along either our 175 yards straight track or our 240 yards full bend track.

You do not need to have raced whippets before as our Chairman (John Bishop) and our Racing Manager (Ray Jones) will be pleased to trial your dog and give advice.

To begin with, inexperienced dogs are hand-slipped to chase the lure along part or all of the course. If this goes successfully, they can be introduced to the trap and again encouraged to chase the lure. Some whippets take to this immediately, others take a while. They can then be trialled initially with one other dog, then alongside two or three dogs to get your whippet used to following the lure and competing.

To be eligible for racing, a whippet must hold a Kennel Club registration and have a five generation pedigree. All whippets competing at affiliated Open Championships must have a current WCRA passport. The club will be able to advise on this.

Dogs and bitches run together in weight groups to provide fair racing.

Although we are a small club, we have a number of Independent registered Whippet Club Racing Champions including WCRCh Costabob owned by John Bishop, WCRCh Just Dandy and WCRCh Bobbydazzler owned by Ray & Judy Jones, WCRCh Fine & Dandy owned by Ray & Lynn Brion, WCRCh Light Fantastic owned by Rebecca Hough and our latest champion, WCRCh Making Music owned by Allison Haynes.
