A Brief History of the Independent PWRC

The Independent Pedigree Whippet Racing Club was officially founded on 4~November~1990 and was so-called because it was originally an independent club not affilliated to the Whippet Club Racing Association (WCRCA).

The club acquired a track at the Blue Cross Animal Hospital, Burford, Oxfordshire in February, 1992.

The club then commenced racing at a permanent venue in 1992 at Perdiswell Park Sports Centre in Worcester, by kind permission of the Worcester Whippet Racing Club, racing on Saturdays with the Worcester WRC racing on Sundays.

In 1993, the club moved to it's current location in the village of Cotheridge, outside Worcester, and set-out a 175 yards straight course. This site had the great advantage of being generously offered by the landowner for the exclusive use of the club and gave us the luxury  of having a permanently laid-out track with unrestricted access. The course was extended to a 240 yards bend in 1997 to add more variety to the programme.

The club applied for affiliation to the WCRA in 1994.

The club prides itself on the quality and upkeep of the track, and the enthusiasm, dedication and friendliness of its small but hardworking band of members.

In 2000, the club hosted the 30th. anniversary of the foundation of the WCRA. The events included team matches, long jumps, hurdling and fancy dress.

The following is taken from the Programme of Events for the Anniversary Week-end:-

"The first WCRA Championship meeting was held on 16~May~1970 at Bracknell, Berkshire. There were five weight groups, n/e 18, 21, 42, 27 and 30 lbs. over a 240 yards bend. The WCRA organised one more race meeting in 1970, a 120 yards straight at Ascot but, as this was in conjunction with a dog fair, it was not formally a Championship. However, this meeting saw the introduction of the now customary 2 lb. weight groups. At this meeting Black Rainee (Caroles Black Rainee) won the n/e 24 lbs. group. Then aged 4 years, this bitch is famed for breaking the 9 second barrier for 150 yards several times in her career.

In 1971, there were three Championship meetings over 230 yards, 20 yards and 150 yards. At the second meeting (straight), three whippets completed two weight group wins and became the first WCRA Champions. They were WCRCh Charm (Russettwood Moonshine), WCRCh Jake (Woolmer Wayfarer) and WCRCh Our Pepe (Mystic Pepe). Since then, there have been 230 champions made up. The century was reached when Marion Wyart's WCRCh Tiger Bay (Kemerton Tiger Bay) won the 32 lbs. group at Stevenage in 1983. The most recent champion is Kim Saxby's WCRCh Guyes Gwithian (Sunset in Gwythian with Woodspring) who gained his title at the 1st. Championship of 2000.

In 1972, there were again Championships, two at 240 yards and one at 150 yards. At the second one, held at Botley, Oxfordshire, "entry on the day" was tried for the first and only time. In 1973, the format of two bends and two straights was introduced and, for this year only, the weight groups were reduced to seven n/e 17, 19, 21,23, 27 and 30 lbs. Since then, the pattern has been four Championships per year: exceptionally in 1984 a fifth meeting was staged in order to generate additional revenue for the purchase of the WCRA's own equipment. Distances have become standard at 150 yards straight and 240 yards bend, although there have been occasions when the straight has been over 165 yards and 175 yards. In 1998, a ninth weight group of n/e 32 lbs. The first champion in this group was Paul & Jo Chappell's WCRCh Tuskan Raider (Sunlay's Blaze of Glory) made up in 1999.

The title "Veteran Crown" (VC) was introduced in 1984 for whippets over 6 years old who win one championship weight group. Whilst the youngsters run off scratch, the veterans are handicapped by age and weight. Initially, the ages were divided at 6-7 years and over 8 years and they ran in n/e 20, 25 and 30 lbs. the first winners, at Dosthill, Staffordshire, in 1984 were Miss Binfield (Rivedo Red Swan), Our Jack (Our Jack), WCRCh Young Patches (Hurricane Calypso), Flying Bye (Arkubs Passing Bye) and Canny Lad (Karyon Shy Abbott). In 1984 and 1985, there was only one Championship qualifying for the Veteran Crown. Since 1986 there have been two. The weight groups are now n/e 20, 25 and 32 lbs. for 6/7 years and n/e 22 and 32 lbs. for 8 years."

In 2001 the club was awarded the sports club of the year trophy by the WCRA.

In 2004 the club went on line with its first web site.
